Wyong Hospital Link Bridge

Comissioned by NSW Health, the Link Bridge artwork is a 50m vinyl-printed mural running along the pedestrian bridge that connects the original Hospital with the new Emergency Department.

The Link Bridge forms an integral part of Wyong Hospital’s latest development. The overall project has since been nominated for a Premier’s award.

The content for the piece was determined by engaging younger members of the local community to get to the heart of what resonates most.

Initially planned to be garnered by way of face-to-face workshops, lockdown led to a need for a contactless interaction.

I developed a workbook that was sent out to local families in the hopes of attracting drawn and written responses while also providing an engaging activity for kids against the malaise of yet another lockdown.

Activities, locations, natural landmarks and shared values were all identified to create an artwork that reflects a youth-orientated view of community and its relationship with healthcare.

Drawing upon the responses from the workbook, along with consultation with Health Infrastructure and indigenous community members, I was able to sketch out a framework for the piece that included reinterpretations of the drawings and written anwers I had received.

The importance of the natural land borders of Darkinjung Country, with Mount Yengo in the west and the Pacific Ocean in the east helped to establish the natural bookends to the piece.

Once this framework was established I worked with digital illustration software to develop a stylistically cohesive response that did justice to the responses and also allowed for an expression of my own creative vision.
